2017 SILVER A’ Design Award

ADD Architecture Studio received the 2017-2018 SILVER A’ Design Award for Lighting Products and Lighting Projects Design by the International Design Academy, a prestigious jury of influential press, designers, academics, and entrepreneurs. The A’ Design Awards, one of the world’s most prominent design competitions, are held annually in Italy, recognizing design excellence globally.
The awarded design, “Reverse Pickup Table Lamp,” reimagines the traditional table lamp by drawing inspiration from the transmission of sound on a vinyl pickup. The lamp features a rotating translucent marble discus, symbolizing a reverse pickup, with bronze arcs mimicking a needle on vinyl.
The lamp’s unique element is its elegant discus, made from translucent marble, which illuminates gradually as it rotates. The bronze arcs emphasize movement and play between light and shadow. Three discus options, in different colored marbles, cater to varying aesthetics and moods. Users can easily swap discuses to match their preferences.
As the discus rotates, it increases in brightness. The discus can be detached and replaced by pulling it off the guide. A slim base houses a dimmer and adapter on the wire, while a movement sensor triggers the dimming process. The package includes all three discus colors, and the discus is designed to allow easy replacement of the LED tape.
The discus comprises two 3mm thick translucent marble pieces, separated by a circular wreath resembling a bike rim. A 15mm gap between the marbles houses the LED tape, powered through contact with a bronze guide that ensures rotation. The bronze arcs are welded to the rectangular bronze base.
